Thoughts on Boondock Saints 2
I just… well… ugh. I wanted to give this movie a good review. The first one was just so much damned fun, and even Overnight was worth the viewing. While this sequel surely is fun and entertaining (for the most part), relatively speaking it just, well, it wasn’t good. I’m sure Duffy put a lot of love into this, and it’s not worth it to go into minutiae here as I’m no critic.
But I do know this much: there’s a difference between a sequel that simply 1) is what the first movie should have been (i.e. fixes all the problems the original had), and a sequel that 2) improves upon the foundation as well as offers a new experience worthy in its own right. Unfortunately, this movie was actually neither.
For every problem improved upon, another one was added. Taken as a whole one might think these replacement problems wouldn’t have detracted from the movie (for example, The Dark Knight had plot holes, but the overall story & plot moved the movie enough that it didn’t matter). Sadly, it’s just not the case and I can see now why the studio didn’t push this movie on Eventful the same way, say, Paranormal Activity stormed across the country on Eventful.
I won’t try to explain why these problems exist in this sequel, I don’t have the experience to know that. But I do know that they do exist, and it sucks to feel let down, as I know that’s the last thing any cast or crew ever want, least of which is Troy Duffy.
