David Murray is right, we can’t just tell people we’re “out of touch” for a bit because Internet access has become ubiquitous.

Even the astronauts on the International Space Station are tweeting from space. I doubt Isaac Asimov would have predicted that.

So I can’t tell you I won’t be interacting with you over the next week due to lack of Internet access. No, it’s for a simpler reason.

I don’t want to.

Don’t worry, it’s nothing personal. But like any responsible business owner (and let’s be serious, any blogger worth their weight knows blogging is real business), I’m shutting my digital doors until 2010.

I’m glad we can be clear about these boundaries again. It has always bothered me to see people get so caught up in trying to impress others that they lose themselves in the process. Three examples:

  1. Hurried Airport Blackberry Owner – feels more important when they talk on 4 Blackberries at once while running through the airport
  2. Stressed-Out College Student – tries to triple major, despite the fact that no one after their first job will care
  3. Modern Social Media Fanatic – convinced that we need to be on 24/7, posting, responding, tweeting, blogging, vlogging. I’ll be frank: this makes no sense.

Like Jason Fried of 37Signals, I like saying no. Correction: I value saying no. It feels almost as good as saying “You’re welcome” rather than “No problem,” “You bet,” or “No worries.”
