Generation Y and my new direction
by Tyler Hayes, May 6, 2009
This blog used to be all about graphic & web design.
Now, it’s turning more into a Seth Godin-esque life coaching/marketing/design/common sense/business/whatever blog. Probably because I’ve been reading a lot more Seth Godin. A LOT.
I’m shutting down my computer repair business, The Simple Service. (As much as it makes sense, anyway). I don’t enjoy it anymore – not that I ever did, though I convinced myself I did – and I’ve come to love social media, marketing (especially on the Internet), and sales over the last year as I’ve gotten more and more involved in social media. Twitter, especially.
The funny thing is, I could never have learned as much as I did about who I am & where I want to go if I hadn’t tried to start my own crappy computer repair business. I wanted to do something new with it, and therefore I invested all my time on – you guessed it – the Internet. Writing, reading, learning, talking, listening. 24/7.
Anyway, I’m trying to get a job in the social media field in Minneapolis right now. So if you know of anything, let me know. But that’s not the point of this post.
What’s the point, then? Here are the Top Ten Gen Y Marketing Blogs (according to upcoming site Viralogy, almost in beta). I just subscribed to all of them. (I’m up to a healthy 122 RSS feeds in Google Reader now)
I’m going to spend a lot more time writing about the things I’m truly passionate about now: design (still), but also people (especially my generation, Gen Y), human rights, social media, marketing, how to not be an inauthentic asshole, etc.
Thanks for following along with me! And if you’re one of the people who regularly visits without commenting, do speak up! We’d all love to hear from you.
